A Resident Evil live-action series is coming to Netflix in July 2022. Here’s your first look Resident Evil on Netflix, the release date, production schedule and what to expect.

Resident Evil is the upcoming Netflix Original series based on the Capcom game of the same name. Launched in 1996, the franchise has spawned numerous video game sequels, novels, and a popular movie franchise.

Netflix seems to be going all-in Resident Evil featuring this live-action series and also at least two animated projects, the first of which was Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness which was released on Netflix in July 2021.

Netflix itself hasn’t actually posted anything official about the live-action series until August 27, 2020. Then they published the first details through the former NXonNetflix account.

In the script posted by NXonNetflix in August 2020, we know that episode one is called “Welcome to New Racoon City”. The episode was written by Andrew Dabb and directed by Bronwen Hughes (The living Dead

Andrew Dabb directs the series. His previous credits include: supernatural for the CW. This initially caused some concern about the tone of the first season, but at this point it’s too early to say.

Resident Evil Netflix teaser trailers

On May 12, Netflix released two teaser trailers for the new series:

The first teaser gives us an indication of how the story will be split into two parts. One in 2022 and the other 14 years later in 2036 London (more on this later). The song you hear in the background of the first teaser is “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing (In Perfect Harmony)”.

It gives us a first look at Wesker and more.

The second teaser trailer, which hasn’t been shared much, digs into some of the monsters we’ll see, including a mutated spider and the underground worm monster that can tunnel into the second half of the teaser.

Before we dig any further into the weeds, our very first look at Resident Evil came in the form of a first-look teaser of a zombie Doberman plus two photos in the form of a stylized version of the dog featured in the teaser and logo for the new series.

When will Resident Evil be on Netflix?

On March 17, Netflix announced that: Resident Evil would come on July 14, 2022.

What is the plot of? Resident Evil season 1?

The series was first reported in January 2019 according to Deadline. The following was said about the plot of the coming Resident Evil series;

“The drama series explores the dark inner workings of the Umbrella Corporation and the new world order brought about by the T-virus outbreak. While the project is at an early stage, the series is expected to feature all of the signature elements of Resident Evil, including action sequences and Easter eggs.”

In early 2020, Netflix’s Media site listed an official story description for the series (though it has since been removed). This is what the description said:

The city of Clearfield, MD has long been in the shadow of three seemingly unrelated behemoths — the Umbrella Corporation, the decommissioned Greenwood Asylum, and Washington, D.C. Today, twenty-six years after the discovery of the T-Virus, secrets kept by the three will be revealed at the first sign of an outbreak.”

As far as we know, the story takes place over two timelines.

The first is that 14-year-old sisters Jade and Billie Wesker are moving to New Raccoon City. They come to realize that their father is hiding dark secrets that could destroy the world.

The second timeline takes place a decade into the future, where there are only 15 million people left, with more than 6 billion animals and people infected with the T virus. It follows Jade, now thirty, in her efforts to survive in this world.

How is the Netflix series connected to the games? “The games are our backstory. Everything that happens in the games exists in this world,” said showrunner Andrew Dabb.

Wesker in Resident Evil

In addition, in an interview with EW, Andrew Dabb revealed that the show follows the timelines of the game, meaning Wesker has somehow been resurrected. He teased, “I don’t want to give too much away, but I’ll say that explaining why Wesker is the way he is and how he’s still alive go hand in hand.”

How far in production is Resident Evil season one?

Official production status: post production (last updated: 14/12/2021)

The first pre-production was due to take place in April 2020 before the main shoots between June and October 2020. As you can probably guess, those plans were thrown out after COVID-19 ravaged all production schedules in 2020. A new date of February 2021 was reported, but that too has since changed.

Thanks to an earlier report from ProductionWeekly, we know that filming for Resident Evil took place between September 8, 2021 and December 14, 2021. As of December 14, production status on IMDb has changed to post-production, which is in line with what was reported by ProductionWeekly.

In the aforementioned EW article, Dabb talks about the future of the series and how we could somehow see Resident Evil: Village come to our screens and say, “Maybe we won’t get there until Season 5, but it’s in our world. As we move forward and talk about scripts for season 2, the village is a resource we can tap into.”
