Gay Science’s Rob Anderson on How He Approaches Music and Comedy – Exclusive

We all know the saying “with great power comes great responsibility” but we all need to hear is “with Pride Month comes great music and lots of celebration.” Even better is supporting queer artists, entertainers, actors and more, not just this month, but throughout the year. For example, you can buy Pride clothes, but buying them from a queer company or designer is best (we’re looking at you, corporate Pride).

The same goes for music. Thankfully, Pride Month 2022 has been graced with the debut single from TikTok star and comedian Rob Anderson, whose “Gay Science” stars have racked him up over 2 million followers on the short video app. We see why: Anderson’s videos, which use “science” to explain gay stereotypes, are hilarious and rooted in real life experiences. With his music, Anderson proves that he can do it all – and that he can use his skills in many arenas.

Luckily, we were able to chat with him about his music and comedy, and in an exclusive interview with The List, Anderson discussed not only how his “Gay Science” series has evolved over time, but also his approach to music and comedy. Is it a similar process, or are they completely different for him?

Rob Anderson is meticulous with all his projects

Comedy and music are very different, but for Rob Anderson they deserve and need the same amount of attention to detail. In fact, regarding his approach to the two, he told The List, “It’s a very similar approach where I focus on something as hard as I can — with great detail and production quality.”

“I want something to be the best it can be,” explains Anderson. “With my music I plan to do the same with this new song and future songs, taking concepts that really shouldn’t be songs. Someone really shouldn’t be singing about this – why would it ever deserve a song? – and making the production quality great.” Of course, Anderson is here referring to his children’s book, “The Fergamerican National Anthem: A Civics Story”. This book is a fun twist on Fergie’s 2018 “National Anthem” rendition.

With Anderson’s ability to take it all and make it hilarious or a summer hit, there’s no doubt his music career will only soar from here. This is also apparent from the effort he put into the music video “Nothing for You”. †[Also], there’s the music video with great sets, costumes, great dancers. ‘Nothing for You’ has great choreographies and dancers,” he added. “And then when you listen to the music, it sounds so good. And when you listen to the lyrics, you think, ‘Wait, what? Do they really say that?’ That’s the kind of atmosphere I want to have with my music.”

Ultimately, Anderson’s music is wacky, but takes on the same details as his comedy.
